From NUS modules entry:
(this post is probably only relevant for NUS undergraduates or undergraduates-to-be)
So, today is the release of NUS AY08/09 Sem 2 results.
After taking 10 modules for the past 2 semesters, here’s a quick summary of each module.
Sem 1:
1. PH1101E – Reason and Persuasion

(credits: http://www.accountingethics.com/)
Looking at the module title, I thought it was a “how to persuade people with sound reasoning” kinda module. Wrong. It was (boring shit) about Plato and Socrates. In short, it was essentially about Philosophy. Come to think of it, I must be dumb to think it was an interesting module teaching you how to debate; though I must admit it did teach us how to reason/argue.
What to expect:
One draft essay, one essay, 3 blog comments, tutorial participation and final exam. Webcast lecturers were available (but I didn’t bother to watch despite skipping numerous lectures).
What I dislike most about this module:
The lecturer and the textbook which was coincidentally written by the lecturer himself. The lecturer was a Caucasian man with a strong American accent and he has one of the most powerful voices to make one go drowsy. He seemed to be talking to himself all the time. The lectures were normally 40+ to even 60+++ slides long; some slides contain merely an illustration (also drawn by him) which you wouldn’t understand if you didn’t listen to him. Also, you could most probably find what you see in the slides in the textbook, word for word.
What I like most about this module:
The EoY(End-of-Year) 20 MCQs open-book exam. Was kinda a breeze.
How I did:
I would say much better than I had expected. Must be the MCQs!
-
2. SW1101E- Introduction to Social Work

(credits: http://www.nataliedee.com/102606/social-work.jpg)
Multiple lecturers. A general introduction to social work. A pretty useful module.
What to expect:
One/two short reflection essay(s), one project, tutorial presentations (group members could take turns), a one-day attachment work, a visit to NGOs(Non-governmental organizations) NPOs(Non-Profit Organizations), final exam. There were weekly (supposedly) readings. No webcast unless lectures fall on Public Holidays.
What I dislike most about this module:
My grade.
What I like most about this module:
My tutor- he was a humorous social worker. Tutorials were enjoyable.
How I did:
Average. The final exam was not that easy; reading the text won’t get you fully prepared- read newspaper diligently!
-
3. CL1101E- Introduction to Chinese Language

(credits: http://www.thlibo.com/2007/09/13/book-of-genesis-encoded-in-chinese-language/)
I took this module after my 3rd failed CORS appeal (I screwed up my modules stuff badly and had 3 appeals). I thought it would be like those Chinese lessons in JC and secondary school, writing oompostitions and doing comprehensions. Wrong. It’s about the basis of Chinese LANGUAGE’; learnt stuff about its structure, grammar and likes. Very technical.
What to expect:
A few assignments which the native Chinese pros aced easily and final exam.
What I dislike most about this module:
The textbook was not very useful.
What I like most about this module:
Workload wasn’t very heavy.
How I did:
Gone were the days of Aces during secondary school and JC times.
-
4. GEM2005- Film and History

(credits: http://www.popsci.com/entertainment-gaming/article/2008-04/popsci%E2%80%99s-guide-sci-tech-summer-movies)
Despite the word ‘History’, the films were not the typical film noir. We got to watch recent movies such as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006). On the other hand, we also got to watch rather good films which were made before I was born, such as Rain Man (1988).
What to expect:
A 500 words essay every 2 weeks, a long essay and weekly online forum participation. Non-examinable. No webcast, of course. And the lecture slides weren’t even available online.
What I dislike most about this module:
No good guidelines to aid you in scoring. Workload can be heavy if time management is poor. Some movies could be really dull or funny but meaningless (the lecturers themselves said they still didn’t understand certain movies they played).
What I like most about this module:
The style of the lectures- very relaxing. The lecturers would play music, ranging from theme songs to soft rock to party R&B. When the lecture theater was about full, they would start by a short background introduction to the week’s theme. After a short break (for us to get food and to answer nature’s call), the film would be played and when it had finished, we would be free to go. Since most films were/are less than 2 hours long, we often got off earlier than the supposedly 4 hours long lecture. On days which we were to get our essays back, we would have to stay behind to collect them after the film had finished playing.
My trick/tip:
Stream the movie beforehand and watch in the comfort of your room. Hence, you could go off right after the first part of the lecture. However, be mindful of the collection of essays. And some movies might not be available online. So check before skipping the second part of the lecture!
How I did:
Average, sadly.
-
5. NM1101E- Communications, New Media and Society

(credits: http://www.conversationagent.com/2007/11/what-is-new-med.html)
A compulsory module for CNM majors. Multiple lecturers. Taught me many things about Internet and its uses which I didn’t think about in the past. Such as posting pictures of yourself online on FB and blogs may come back and haunt you one day (for instance, your future employer googles you and find pictures of you participating in a wet t-shirt competition. uh uh, not cool) even if you had deleted them. [read Straits Time's DL section on 27th May 2009] Such pictures are still on the cyberspace somewhere.
What to expect:
Mid-sem test (MCQs, short answers and short essay), mini projects, tutorial participation and final exam (only MCQs). No webcast.
What I dislike most about this module:
Readings can be frustrating at times.
What I like most about this module:
Light workload and the final exam which had scenario-based questions that were witty and could pass off as jokes!
How I did:
Ok. Could have been better if I had worked hard for my mid-sem test.
-
-
Sem 2:
1. NM2101- Theories of Communications and New Media

(credits: http://members.atlantic.net/~lperry/theories.htm)
Theories. Awwww.. It’s really as boring as you think it is.
What to expect:
Mid-sem test (4 short essays, 40%), final exam (40%) and tutorial participation (20%).
What I dislike most about this module:
Almost everything, from the content to the textbook to the mismatch lectures to the tutorials to the exam question. No webcast.
What I like most about this module:
Although the module planning done by the lecturer was not to my liking, I like him! Funny guy who would share with us random stuff like he adores cute things. Another thing which I like is that topics tested in the mid-sem were excluded in the final exam.
How I did:
Amazingly, much better than I had expected!
-
2. NM2220- Introduction to Media Writing

(credits: http://www.rkrk.net.au/images/3/35/Information_overload.jpg)
A brief and wide range of media writing, from journalism to advertising to public relations (PR). Multiple lecturers. A pre-requisite module for many other modules.
What to expect:
Weekly 100-words reflection, 2 assignments, 1 project, final exam and tutorial/forum participation. No webcast.
What I dislike most about the module:
The heavy workload. At a point of time, just for this module, I had to do my weekly reflection plus assignment plus project. Hell. The tutorials were weekly and double hours, instead of the ‘normal’ weekly single hour tutorials we get. Tutorials are linked to the lecture day (if you got the Tues lecture, your tutorial must be on either Tues or Wed; if it’s the Thur’s, tutorials on Thurs/Fri), hence, it might possibly screw your timetable up. Plus, both lectures were at an unearthly EIGHT AM.
What I like most about the module:
The lectures can be interesting.
How I did:
Bad. My group screwed up our project. And I screwed up my first assignment.
-
3. NM2219- Principles of Communication Management

(credits: http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/m/media_relations.asp)
Had to take this as I plan to become a PR practitioner. Multiple lecturers.
What to expect:
2 tests (MCQs), 1 project and final exam (MCQs).
What I dislike most about this module:
I couldn’t believe how unbelievably blur/sotong the lecturer was. We had to do news clippings throughout the whole sem for our project. As widely announced, we were told to collect 10-12 new articles each, hence for our group of 6, we had to collect at least 60 different news articles within a time period of 3 months. A few days before the submission of our project report and new clippings, she told us that she had made a mistake- we were only supposed to collect 10-12 articles per GROUP. Holy. Do the maths and you should know how popped our eyes were when we saw that announcement.
What I like most about this module:
The MCQs tests and exams.
How I did:
I must admit I got a little complacent after the 2 tests and didn’t study much for the final exam. Could have been even better!
Tip/Trick:
Attend every lecture and be attentive. They tested us questions such as “according to your lecturer……”.
-
4. SSA1202- Southeast Asia: A Changing Region

(credits: http://sipo95.wordpress.com/)
About Southeast Asia. From eating patterns to economic landscapes to politics. 2 lecturers who kept flirting in front of us.
What to expect:
1 essay assignment, 1 field trip report, tutorial participation and final exam (short essays). No webcast.
What I dislike most about the module:
The textbook. Completely irrelevant. Didn’t even read it.
What I like most about the module:
The tutorials. Don’t have to prepare anything for it, just go there and utter a few sentences. However, tutorials were a bore.
How I did:
Average.
-
5. TS1101E- Introduction to Theatre and Drama

Brief introduction to theatre theories and practical. The latter is fun!
What to expect:
2 essay assignments, practical presentations, weekly readings/tutorial preparation(depends on who your tutor is), practical exam and final written exam (2 essays). Oh, and there are practical lessons every week, 2 hours, which are not shown on the module description. Cunning.
What I dislike most about this module:
The practical exam was during the reading week. It took up much of our time.
What I like most about this module:
The practical lessons. Here’s where you get to know your TS friends.
Tip:
Turn up for your practical lessons. You need to build close rapport with your TS mates ‘cos you would have to work with them for your final exam. Surely, you would want to know who is nice/not nice to work with. Plus, these lessons were and would be so much fun!
Disclaimer: These information are based on my personal experiences. There’s a possiblity that it will not apply to you should NUS has made certain changes to the module(s). Do check with the faculty personnel. I’m writing these ‘cos I understand the frustration when I couldn’t find such information online while ‘researching’ on modules which I had wanted to take. I hope these will help anyone who plan to take up certain modules in NUS. ![]()

Hey! Nice Post.. I so want to take theatre studies but I can’t because I failed the QET! How was it scoring wise?
I agree on ur point about PH1101E . The MCQs really help a LOT> My essays were B/ B+’s and my grade was an A-. I got sooo lucky!
Which year are you btw?
Hello. I’m Year 2.
TS1101E requires a lot of time and effort. But it was truly enjoyable. Scoring wise, can easily get the mean grade.
Which fac are you from? major?
hey can i kn how was nm2216?
are there projects?
thx in advance!:))
yups. there will be a group project (group members are “randomly” assigned by the lecturer). the topics will be changed every sem. mine was from HPB. you can google for nm2216 project slides. since a few(?) sems ago, we were told to upload on slideshare(?).
there will be a few graded individual assignments which are supposed to aid us in our project. i think it pretty much depends on the tutor (who will mark your assignment). mine was tania and i think she’s superb, of cos not only because she gave me high grades (i got 22 out of the 25% allocated for the overall grade).
about the proj, till now, my group still believes that we deserve higher marks than given. lol. i can only say: DO NOT CONFORM TO THE GIVEN PROJ PPT SLIDES. Other than that, it’s actually quite an enjoyable project except for the PACT part (you’ll know).
even though my group didn’t do well for the proj (we got 21++ out of 30%) as compared to the rest of the cohort (lowest:19, highest:26 and 1/3 of the cohort scored 21-22 iirc), i (surprisingly) bagged an A for this module.
HTH.
Oh ya, the design exercises during lectures can be quite dreadful. lol. they claimed that these exercises are graded but it’s part of the puny 5% which includes forum participation and tutorial participation as well.
Thx for the in-depth views!:))
really helpful!:))
cheers!
Hi! How was NM2209?
I’m intending to take it as an unrestricted elective but I’m afraid its gna be really expensive!
Oh! I found it a highly enjoyable mod ‘cos it’s so closely related to our lives (think SNSs). The workload was so light that I can’t even remember what we did the entire sem. LOL.
I just did a quick search on IVLE. The assessment is as follows:
Newsflash (500 word commentary on news report) 20%
In-class quiz (closed book) 35%
Tutorial participation 10%
Exam (closed book) 35%
I guess everyone has some basic knowledge of social media; the key is to apply the theories in your answers.
I find NM mods generally cheaper than mods such as MKT1003 and BSP etc.
HTH
Thanks a lot!!!
Btw how did you manage to find the assessment for the module?
IVLE search!
Any tips on breadth modules for science students?
Avoid mods which emphasize on writing? There are GOOD writers among science students though.
any tips/reviews for gek1508?
avoid it?
Hiiii there. I need some advice on which area of interest in NM is best for which type of person. I heard Media Design is more like for computing kids, and Comm Management is what people usually take as the safe route? Media studies look abit dry…
I’m quite keen on media design, but im scared it’ll be too cheem with all the coding and things like that.
Hello.
Are you in year 1?
Honestly, I don’t have an answer for you. Some of us are still searching for the right path in our third or fourth year. Some are still clueless even after they have graduated.
The thing is, due to the graduation requirements, we kinda have to try out different types of NM modules. For instance, out of all the level 2 mods offered by CNM, I think I did all except NM2217?
So eventually, you will probably get a taste of each field.
Your last concern, “I’m quite keen on media design, but im scared it’ll be too cheem with all the coding and things like that.”, I don’t think NM has mods which deal with coding? At least I haven’t encountered them.
If you really want to know, go find out on your own. Find a free day, go sit in one of those media design lectures and you will get a clearer idea
HTH and good luck!
Hi,
I am a student journalist for LianHe Zaobao. We are currently looking for people who reviews modules online to interview. Would it be okay if I interview you?
My contact no is .
Hope to hear from you soon, thanks!
(comment edited to remove personal info)
Hi, nice review. Can I ask about NM2210 Asthetics of new media?
How’s the module? Is it managable for a breadth module? Any idea on the assessments?
Thanks in advance.
Hi, sorry for the late reply.
When i was taking this module, the lecturer was preparing for her PhD, and thus, the workload got increasingly light towards the end of the sem. At the beginning of the sem, it was a little heavy.
With regards to the assessments, I think she will keep changing it ‘cos for us, it was kinda decided there and then. Felt a little impromptu?
Honestly, I will not recommend anyone to take this module unless you have bright pink hair, or you’re a guy or that you’re extremely outspoken.
A large proportion of your grade will come from class participation. Being aware of that, I made extra effort to participate more actively. Sadly, the lecturer couldn’t really remember me which resulted in a grade which I didn’t quite expect. For instance, there was once she asked the class for a metaphor, I was the (first and) only one who gave her one. A few minutes later, she turned and looked at another girl and spoke as if that girl had given that metaphor. Imagine my anger which was fueled by a friend who kept laughing at my predicament.
Thus I recommend for the pink hair and whatnots. And yes, she seems to give guys better grades. For example, if you’re a guy and you spoke only once in class, you can get like 8-9+ upon 10 for class participation. But if you’re a female and spoke like 5 times and above, you’d be happy to get a 7.5. It’s that bad.
HTHS.
Hello! Can you give some comments on NM3210 Cybercrime and Society? Can’t find any reviews on module-reviews and in the www
What’s the module about? Do you still rmb the assessment component? Any comments like boring lecturer, easy to score etc.?
Thanks in advance!
Oh hello. The module covers cybercrimes (eg. phishing, hacking, child pornography, IP infringement) rather broadly.
To be frank, it was a little sad that the lecturer actually made such an interesting module boring. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a nice lecturer but perhaps I ain’t used to her teaching style. She lagged behind the lesson plan. For instance, think it was week 13 already but we were actually covering week 7/8′s content. She teaches at a very sloooow pace, such that we couldn’t finish all the content before week 13, this resulted in her skipping one or two topics completely. And not to forget the dead links to ~20% of our readings.
Assessment wise, there wasn’t a midterm test but we had weekly reaction papers, group project (report + presentation) and the final paper. Check IVLE for more detailed breakdown.
My group got 16/20 for the project and the range I heard was around 15-18. But eventually I got an A for the module, probably due to the final paper since the reaction papers constituted a very small percentage.
Study the lecture notes like mad since the final paper is, honestly, pure regurgitation IMHO.
In short, I would recommend anyone to take up this module (and maybe together with IT1004 as they complement each other so well. I did that and got A for both. Was a little sneaky, I used a little help from NM3210 TA for my IT1004 project. Nothing major though! :p) as the module on a whole is rather informative.
Good luck!
Thanks for your in-depth review! I did an IVLE search on the lecturer and realised she’s the same lecturer for Goverance and New Media. Lol, i heard from my friend who took that module last sem on how bad a lecturer she is, and she speaks with a weird accent o__o Now i’m unsure if i should still take this Cybercrime module..and project presentation is during lecture?! :S Scaryyyy~
I’m going to see if i can fit IT1004 into my timetable should i really take Cybercrime :p
No problem at all!
Yups, it’s the same lecturer.
Majority of the presentations was during the lectures but it didn’t matter much cos most people would skip those lectures entirely or leave after they were done with their own presentation. No worries about that at all.
Btw, we had e-learning when we took NM3210 and we did the e-learning via Second Life. Just a heads-up in case you don’t like Second Life.
I’d say take it if you can mug and memorize well!
Okie, I don’t mind mugging haha. I’d never used Second Life before, so I can’t say if I’ll like/dislike it :3
Anyway thanks again!~ Really appreciate it!
Oh ya, the most important reason why I recommend IT1004 is that it’s practically made for NM students.
Looking at the IT1004 topics:
-Introduction to E-commerce
-E-commerce Business Model –>NM3215
-Auctions, portals and communities –>NM2209
-Website design –> NM2208? And a bit of NM2201?
-Ethics: Intellectual property and privacy –>NM3880A, NM2209
-B2C, B2B E-commerce
-Marketing and Advertisement –>NM3215
-Security threats and encryption –>NM3210
hi can i ask for nm3210 cybercrime and society, what’s the format for its final exam? and are there more readings compared to nm3224 cultural industries?
for nm3217, would it be a disadvantage if i dunnoe abt photoshop and dream weaver?
thank you for your help!
Hello.
IIRC, the format for NM3210 final exam was MCQs+ short answers. I’ve not taken 3224 so I can’t compare the readings. As mentioned in the previous few comments, quite a handful of readings for 3210 was not available to us.
For 3217, of course having good PS and dreamweaver skills will definitely give you an advantage. Since it’s a design module (with quite a bit of research and writing), I’d say that if you have done well for NM2208, there will be higher chance of you doing well for 3217 too. After doing not-so-well for 2208, I thought I would give design modules another try. But neh, if I have a choice, I would rather do 3220 instead.
Hi! I’m going to start at NUS this year and was wondering if you could tell me more about new media as a major? I’m sorta deciding between this and literature. thank you in advance for your helpful reviews above
bidding starts next week so i’m super scared and excited
Hi there!
Welcome to NUS/FASS! Lol.
What do you want to know more about NM as a major? It can be quite competitive, sometimes. You’ll meet interesting people. And ermm.. It’s a pretty new department and as I heard, NM and Econs are two of the most popular majors in FASS.
Don’t worry about deciding which major to take up. Yet. Try both NM1101E and a literature module in your first sem and you will get a taste of what’s each like.
Some people only decide/declare their major after two sems or so. It’s common to hear people say that “I’m major-less” in the first two sems.
So let’s say you love both NM and lit after taking a few modules or so, go try doing double majors!
Or if you’re afraid of not being able to cope, can always minor in NM/lit.
By the way, I think CNM had made a new rule for the cohorts after mine. Need to get a B and above for NM1101E (the lowest level for NM mods, which is also an exposure module) to be a NM major. If it’s B- and below, I think you will have to appeal with portfolio etc. Check CNM website to double check the info. One more thing, higher level NM modules are definitely far more interesting/fun than NM1101E. NM1101E was kinda boring. So don’t feel discouraged to major in NM after taking NM1101E. It will get better.
Anyway, I’m sure you will enjoy NUS (not sure about CORS bidding though).
Have fun!
Thanks so much for helping
I’ll try for a double major definitely if I can.
I was hoping that you could help me in the bidding? As in how do I take the modules if there are fixed criterion on them like singapore studies and general studies and such but onlu 5 modules that I can take. Then won’t that mean I’ll take forever to get 80MCs?
If you could help me with explaining the bidding system, I’d be so thankful
and hopefully i’ll major in new media too!
thanks!
No worries about it.
Before I begin, just keep in mind that I’m not the best person to explain the bidding system (I still failed to bid some modules last sem). Check here: http://www.nus.edu.sg/cors/using-cors.html
First, you need to know that there are two TYPES of points which you can use. Namely, Programme (P) points and General (G) Points.
For us, we will have more P points than G points. People from other faculties might have more G points than P points.
You use P points to bid for module offered by FASS, there are a few exceptions though. G points for whatever modules offered by other faculties.
IIRC, we will only be allocated with 500 G points in the very first sem. 500 is pretty little as some really popular modules may have starting bids at 1000+. Crazy I know.
You don’t have to worry so much about which type of points to use when bidding for a particular module as the bidding system (ie CORS) will automatically tells you so.
“As in how do I take the modules if there are fixed criterion on them like singapore studies and general studies and such but onlu 5 modules that I can take.” –> NUS gives us sufficient flexibility. You can choose when you wanna do these modules. You DON’T have to do them all in the very first sem. And I doubt anyone can do so with the puny 500 G points.
Usually 1 module is 4MCs. So 1 sem you take 5 mods = 20 MCS. If you have super good time management and diligence and determination, you can overload to 6 or 7 modules.
I would suggest that you take all FASS modules in the first sem for a few reasons.
Firstly, you can kinda save up on the G-points so it’ll be easier for you to bid for SS/GE mods in the subsequent sems.
Secondly, there are some requirements that we have to fulfill as Arts students. For instance,
“Pass a minimum of 12MC with at least 4MC from each of the following division:
(1) Asian Studies Division
(2) Humanities Division
(3) Social Sciences Division”
That’s 3 mods. So plus one lit and one NM mods, you are done for the sem!
One thing to note, we have 7 UEs(Unrestricted Elective Modules) to complete throughout the whole 3 or 4 years. Use them wisely. In your case where you might do a minor, you have to be careful of what random modules you do as the minor kinda replace the UEs if I’m not wrong. I’ve taken too many random modules before I started considering to minor in something, which was then too late. Again, check FASS webpage for more accurate information.
read this: http://life-of-a-nus-computing-student.blogspot.com/search/label/cors
Loved that blog when I was a freshie myself.
Try to google modules before bidding for them. Read people’s reviews on the modules you’re interested in.

Hi!
Thanks so much for answering my questions
I was just wondering if I have to have the macbook if i decide to do CNM. I’d imagine that CNM would have a lot of editing and new media stuff that the mac would be better?
Sorry for the late reply.
Either one is fine. Just bear in mind that you need the Mac adapter when using the laptop for presentations. And it’s not uncommon to hear that it had screwed up during presentations!
Hi can I know how was NM3219? because there is no final exam so would it be very difficult to score on the projects? thanks!
It was ok but the lecturer(-cum-tutor) can be biased in the sense that she may favour certain people a lot.
Important to get good project mates.
I feel that the projects were easier than personal assignments.
Hi there,
I happen to see your post on the modules from NUS.. I think I need your help! Im very confused in all the stuffs now and that I have failed to obtain 1 of my main modules which is PH1101E and I really hope to get that module, have you try appealing before? Can you teach me some tips? I need it asap
(
Do CORS appeal?
I vaguely remember that Philosophy department was quite flexible.
Hi,
Sorry I’m abit confused.
How do we log in into CORS to appeal after all the bidding rounds is over?
They don’t allow you to log in anymore don’t they?
I guess so.
Try logging in on Wednesday? They would have opened CORS for the tutorial swapping session.
Hi,
I would like to know which newspapers do you read or would recommend cnm majors to read? Sorry if the question came out funny.
Hi there,
so sorry for the late reply.
I remember a media writing lecturer once recommended that we read The International Herald Tribune as there are free copies of it available daily(?) in NUS.
Know the ADM block? Think there’s a IHT stand there near the POSB ATM.
Hope that this has answered your question.
I dun have a question. I juz need to tell you tis…
Witty, fun, straightforward & strives not to be too politically incorrect. Love your writing. This blog is serious. I love it!
p.s. juz 1 thing though & I dun meant tis to undermine at all, I’d ‘stole’ I feel, will be more grammatically apt?
Witty, fun, straightforward & strives not to be too politically incorrect. Love your writing. This blog is serious. I love it!
-uhmm. Thanks? I actually strive to be politically correct as I know that whatever things said online will haunt you back one day. Does this imply that I’d failed to do so? Lol.
p.s. juz 1 thing though & I dun meant tis to undermine at all, I’d ‘stole’ I feel, will be more grammatically apt?
-”I’d” is a contraction for both “I would” and “I had”. So, “I’d stolen a papaya” should be read as “I had stolen a papaya” which is grammatically correct yea?
And if it’s “I would” then it will be “I would steal a papaya”. But really, I wouldn’t. Ok, I did.
Hi there
I’m currently a CNM major in my second year and your blog has given me an idea on what modules to take so thanks a lot! But sometimes CNM can be a real pain and tutors can be rather stingy with marks… which totally makes me feel like shit, considering the amount of effort put in. Anyway, was just wondering if you went on exchange (perhaps you’ve already written somewhere on your blog about it, so i apologise for asking it again)? Or do you have other NM friends that went on exchange? I’m thinking of going back to Germany but haven’t heard of NM majors who go there for exchange :/
Hello, I apologize for the late reply.
I have not known of any NM students going to Germany for exchange. Had a friend from Science who went there though.
If you’re still contemplating, how about Sweden? There is a whole bunch of NM people who went to Sweden for exchange. Heard that it’s really beautiful there!
hello there!
year three NM major here! i was wondering if you could tell me more about NM3880A? Planning to take it next sem!
Personally, I did pretty well (A+) for this mod.
You have to first consider if you’re able to “withstand” any kind of lecturers. Some classmates had really hated the lecturer but I was never one of them (in fact, I took her mod again this sem).
Mid-term and final exam were both MCQs + True/False questions. And bear in mind, the lecturer sets very tricky questions. Very.
Class participation and peer evaluation are important to the lecturer. So if you are able to speak up in class with substantial quality, you’d be rewarded. Look forward to lots of IVLE forum participation too!
HTH.
Congrats to you!
Ah okay… may i know who’s the lecturer teaching it?
eek! i forgot about the great IVLE XD Thank you very much for your advice above
just wondering, how was lsm1301 for you? I don’t have a bio background so I would like to find out how manageable the module is..
I had zero bio background too. The module on the whole was quite interesting.
There were two lecturers; one was really good (like watching a performance) and the other one was incredibly bad. Hence, I only attended the lectures for the first half of the sem.
I would say they give you sufficient information. The content was more of breadth than depth. Only certain concepts like some DNA stuff I had to ask my sister, who did bio-tech, to explain further. Otherwise, I would say all are manageable!
Can give it a try. The first lecturer was one of the best in my entire NUS life.
Hiiii just wondering, how was nm3217 like?
It’s more than a designing module.
It can be quite frustrating to write objectives for the end-product (eg brochure, folder, website etc) as you have to try to crap something out.
Hi, just like to ask about some NM mods even though my bidding is tmr lol.
I’m thinking of taking 5 NM mods (along with a lang mod) for my next sem. I’ve currently been allocated NM2102 n NM2209 and am thinking of taking NM3204 (e learning), NM3217 (publications & design) and NM3219 (writing for comm mgmt). Any heads up as to how these modules are like and whether out of these 3 mods, I should avoid any ?
Thanks for helping !
I’ve not taken NM3204 before.
The workload for NM3217 is quite heavy. It might be overwhelming if you take 3217 along with 3219. There would be deliverables for each module every other week.
I enjoyed NM2209.
Hi!!!!!
I’m deciding between 3215 (advertising) and 2201 (inter cultural communication) for my UE for sem 2… Which would you recommend? I’m from fass too. Thanks!
I would say 3215. While to a certain extent it depends on your project group, it can be a pretty fun module. Pick the “right” organisation/company for your project. My group did Udders Ice Cream so our advertising proposal and strategies were more fun and thus enjoyable. The lecturer is one funny guy too.
Having said that, if you like to take up something useful, you will definitely learn more from 2201. However, the end of year exam was pretty hard as there was really TOO MUCH to write within the short span of two hours.
Not only do you have to regurgitate the stuff taught, you have to compare and contrast between two cultures or more, and then give examples for each to score. It was really crazy and you have to think and write fast. One question I vaguely remember was to analyse the NUS culture using the Cultural Dimensions of Hosftede and give examples for each index.
Hi! Awesome reviews for all the modules taken!
Anyway I’m really interested in design, so I think I’m more suited towards NM2208. But I can’t seem to find that module under CORS. Is that module no longer available?
And what module will you recommend for student that likes design other than NM2208?
I think it’s just not available for this semester. http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/cnm/undergraduate_offering11_12.html
Since I dislike designing, I had only read 2208 and 3217. However, the latter is actually much more than designing.
You can get a brochure from the CNM office which will tell you what mods are suitable for different fields.
hi there, i appreciate your effort in writing helpful comments/reviews for so many modules even though im only here for nm2209. good karma heading your way hahaha. thanks!
how is thai painting?
thanks!
Sorry, I didn’t read this module. Nor heard of it. Interesting.
hi, I’m going to study Biz in NUS. What breadth modules should I take? I’m someone who don’t really like anything. Like I just want to score. I learnt piano and Japanese (for 5 years) if it helps? My mother is a doctor so I guess I’m good at the science & math stuff.
I plan to go Duke-NUS graduate school hence I must take the easy to score modules. I don’t mind writing, just hate group work and tutorials.
Thanks for helping!
